Working in a Pre-School

Narrator: The Pre-school film clips featured are based on the Montessori ethos. Staff in these settings are routinely referred to as teachers, where as other Pre-school refer to staff as practitioners. Montessori teaching qualifications mentioned in the clips enhance the quality of childcare provision, however this practice of training and progression for staff is not exclusive to Montessori. An alternative qualification route is available to all other Pre-schools to similarly improve the quality of childcare.

Woman: When the children come in, in the morning, we have circle time, they all sit down together in a group, we have a sound of the week and a colour of the week and then we do different songs together to sort of welcome all the children in as they come in, in the mornings.

Then we split into 2 groups and half of them come upstairs to do either Montessori or Motor skills and the other half will stay downstairs and do art and then we swap over after drinks and so the other group will do the other activity. Then they have story time and lunchtime. Then the afternoon session is much the same but upstairs we’ll have whichever Montessori or Motor skills we haven’t done in the morning and downstairs we’ll do free play.
