Question: How much can I expect to earn if I choose a career in Childcare?
Answer:
This will mostly depend on your level of experience, any qualifications you have and the type of job you do. Based on our most recent information:

In a Pre-School, group leaders average £7.60 per hour, deputy leaders £6.85 per hour and assistants £5.85 an hour

In a Day Nursery, a nursery manager could expect to earn between £15,000 - £23,000, with nursery assistants earning £8,000 - £10,000

Childminders’ earnings range from £2.64 to £6.00 an hour per child

The basic average salary is about £9K, but salary potential can rise to £30K for some Senior Nursery Managers and managers of Children's Centres.

Question: If I do not have a Childcare qualification, how can you help me?
Answer:
If you are thinking of returning to work, are currently unemployed or receiving benefits, it may be advisable to discuss your situation with your local JobCentre Plus. Alternatively, we would be happy to discuss the situation with you. On occasions, financial assistance initiatives may be available to help you while you train.

Question: What are the most appropriate Childcare qualifications to have?
Answer:
This will depend on the age group of the children, the type of job and your preferred learning style. Attaining accredited qualifications is, however, strongly recommended as this has been proven to raise the quality of childcare provision in Essex.

You should be qualified to at least NVQ Level 2 in Childcare and Education or equivalent. There are different qualifications that cover Playwork, Pre-Schools and Early Years.

Question: Who pays for training and would I receive income while learning?
Answer: Unfortunately there are no firm rules. A number of privately-owned childcare businesses are also registered training providers. Where training is provided in-house, you could be earning while learning.

If you have started a college course straight from school, then you may be entitled to an Educational Maintenance Allowance. Work placements in this situation would be organised for you by the college.

From time to time, our service and partner organisations have been successful in securing external funds for training purposes. Please arrange to discuss with us if you would like further information: workingwithchildren@essexcc.gov.uk

Question: Where am I able to train?
Answer:
A number of alternatives are available - some on a full-time basis and some by attending college once a week on day release. National Vocational Qualifications can be studied for while you are working. You may even be able to study by correspondence or through computer learning.

If you would like more information, please refer to your local college or adult education centre and ask them about courses in Early Years, Childcare and Playwork.
